BMW held an event in Vancouver, BC to officially launch the F15 X5 in North America. That proved to be a great opportunity for various journalists to test the new car, just like the guys from autoblog did.
Their test included all models, so we can't really point one out right now. The cars they had to take for a spin were an xDrive50i model, the only diesel available in the US, the xDrive35d and the entry-level (for now) xDrive35i.
The most powerful of the bunch is the 50i model, powered by an updated version of the 4.4-liter turbocharged N63 V8 engine that now makes 450 HP and 650 Nm (480 lb-ft) of torque, followed by the 35i model with 306 HP and 400 Nm (300 lb-ft) of torque and the diesel, with 258 HP and 560 Nm (416 lb-ft) of torque.
On the outside, changes are pretty easily recognizable, the X5 keeping in check with its predecessor but joining the current line-up that has the headlights connected to the kidney grilles at the front.
Inside the changes are even bigger, the design being completely reworked, in a way that says: "I'm a BMW but I'm also in tune with the times". In the pricier version, it has a 10 inch display that will show you every possible piece of information you'll ever need to know.
The iDrive touch interface is also new, showcasing the brand's newest technology like Traffic Jam Assistant, Lane Departure System, Parking Assistant and many others. Next to the iDrive controller you'll find the drivetrain options: Sport+, Sport, Comfort and ECO PRO.
On the road and off the road, the X5 is everything you'd expect it to be. Even though most buyers won't use it on other surfaces than asphalt, it's good to know that the xDrive system is working well off road.
Bottom line, we'll just quote the guys from autoblog as a conclusion: "Price aside, it's still the leader of its class and it's never been better. Is that enough for you? ".
