Around the BMW forums, the Shadowline esthetic look is very popular. Most people prefer it to the chrome design the guys in Bavaria initially fitted the cars with.
However, Shadowline trims are really rare. Only a couple of cars have it from the assembly lines. Furthermore, buying a second hand car won't give you the opportunity to choose your options like with a new car but you'll be looking for useful tips on how to make your car your own.
So, if you decide your car would look better without all the chrome accents on it and want to go for the Shadowline look on a E90, E91, E92 or E93 3 Series, we found a quick DIY that will get you through the process.
You do have 2 options: first, just take the trims off the car and hand them over to some specialized painter or second, just do the painting yourself, in which case you'll need some extra tools.
In order to get the trims down all you need is a Torx 20 screwdriver. For painting purposes you'll also need 220, 230 and 400 grit sandpaper, black paint and clear coat (you should apply this in a couple of layer just to be sure).
All these being gathered around yourself, all you need to do is follow this DIY and be very patient as working with paint is a very delicate matter.
