You know what time it is. It’s that time of the month when we draw the line and take a look at the sales figures to compare the results with other months and the expectancies over the future.
During the second month of 2014, BMW Group sales in North America recorded a decrease of 4.4 percent, most of it due to the abrupt drop of MINI sales that took a hit of 42.8 percent.

While it might seem surprising at first, winter months are never too generous with sales and, with the introduction of the new generation of MINI hardtops this month, it was only expected to see the numbers go down in February.

Overall, BMW sold 24,476 vehicles last month compared to 25,613 sold in the similar period of last year. On a year-to-date basis, the Group managed to keep its head above the water with a slight increase of just 1.2 percent, adding up to 45,272 units over the first two months.

BMW Brand sales, on the other hand, recorded an increase of 3.3 percent, despite troubling weather. In total, 22,017 cars wearing the blue and white roundel on the bonnet were sold, over 1,000 more than in the same period of last year. The most popular models were the X3 with a 51.8 percent increase to 3,301 vehicles and the X1 with a 57.2 percent increase to a grand total of 2,329 units. Year-to-date, BMW brand vehicle sales is up by 6.5 percent.

MINI Brand sales dropped 42.8 percent, as I said earlier on, adding up to 2,459 vehicles, most of them Countryman and Paceman models, the hardtop being quickly rejected by the market, following its imminent replacement. On a year-to-date basis, MINI sales went down 37.3 percent.

“The ferocious February winter in much of the country no doubt increased the desire for BMW SAV’s, but in keeping others away from the showrooms it is also building up future demand,” said BMW of North America President and CEO, Ludwig Willisch.

“The expanding range of BMW models, as seen during the Sochi Olympics, especially the new 4 Series Convertible and Gran Coupe, the new 2 Series, and the soon to arrive all-electric BMW i3, are among the good reasons to look forward to Spring,” he added.
