Back in January we were reporting that Apple's iOS for the Car will arrive later this year on certain Mercedes-Benz models, as a deal between the Stuttgart brand and Apple had been signed for quite a while now.
Well, we were a bit too pessimistic about when it will be included, as Mercedes-Benz just announced that they will be the first German premium car manufacturer to bring Apple's “CarPlay” infotainment system based on the iPhone into cars.
To those unfamiliar, Apple CarPlay is actually the official name of the “iOS in the Car” system, and Mercedes-Benz will not only be the first premium German car manufacturer to feature it, but the first German car maker in general.
“Two years ago we set a new trend with the integration of the smartphone into our vehicles, and Apple and Google have picked it up,” said Prof Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “We offer our customers an ideal in-car infotainment system. We are constantly developing the connected car with the latest technologies available, so that every Mercedes-Benz driver can use their smartphone in the car in full comfort and safety.”
As expected, an Android-based car infotainment system is also on the way, with Mercedes-Benz already showing how awesome it can be with the Android-based AMG Performance Media on the SLS AMG, back in 2011.
The Apple CarPlay allows iPhone users to make calls, use navigation maps, listed to music or access message with just a touch or using their voice – all this while driving their Mercedes-Benz.
A more detailed showing of the functionality of the Apple CarPlay is detailed in the adjacent photo gallery (we would have preferred an official movie, but hey, it's not up to us), with Mercedes-Benz bringing a C-Class W205 fitted with the system at this year's Geneva Motor Show. More models will feature the system later on.
