For a real family man, space and comfort is important. Going on long holidays with your family will require some extra luggage space and a good, comfortable suspension for when the kids are sleeping.
That's when you need a BMW Touring model. Depending on your needs it might be the 3 Series or the 5 Series but either way, the only competition you'll be facing will come only from the other 2 major luxury companies from Germany: Audi and Mercedes.

CAR magazine reviewed the 3 models that will certainly entice you, to highlight the pros and cons of each so that you make the perfect decision, according to your needs.

So, the contestants were the BMW 320d Touring, the Audi A4 Avant and the Mercedes-Benz C220 Estate. All 3 cars have diesel engines and power outputs are close enough to be considered of the same class.

The BMW leads though, as usual, with an 184 HP engine, followed by the A4 with 177 HP and the Mercedes that even though it has a bigger, 2.2-liter engine, comes short with 170 HP.

On the torque fields, the Merc leads with 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) followed by the BMW and Audi with 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque. On the transmission levels, the A4 was fitted with the quattro all-wheel-drive system, whilst the other two were only rear-wheel-drive models.

The interior and exterior looks might be subject to criticism in every model, as no two people have the same exact taste in design. However, the place where the Bimmer pulls away is the driving experience.
The 320d is fast and agile and even in Sport mode the suspension is comfortable enough to turn this car into a tourer. Sure, you should get the adaptive suspension, but it's worth the extra money.

The practicality issue is also of great importance in this comparison and the BMW wins that  one too, having a boot bigger than both its competitors. Furthermore, the rear seats have enough leg room for even the tallest persons and you'll also get the automated tailgate.

In the end, it's up to you what car you choose, as there is no bad car in this comparison but the BMW is the clear winner for its practicality and driving feel, remaining the king of the segment in the opinion of the guys from CAR Magazine.
