It's Barbie's world, and we're just living in it. Now that the 64-year-old icon is getting ready to make her big screen debut this summer, more people are itching to jump on the Barbiecore trend – including as regards their vehicle.
Gone are the days when auto enthusiasts would turn up their nose at the idea of an all-pink vehicle because it's too girly and lame. At least some of them are now interested in Barbiecoring their rides, judging by the major recent spike in searches for pink convertibles in general and pink Chevrolet Corvettes in particular. Barbie really is everything, as the tagline for the upcoming Greta Gerwig movie says.
The official trailer for Barbie dropped in May 2023, and it led to a spike in searches for Barbie-like vehicles, especially for a convertible Corvette like she's shown driving in the footage, automotive marketplace AutoTrader reports. Speaking strictly numbers, searches on the platform for pink convertibles have gone up by 93%, while for convertible Corvettes by 120% after the release of the trailer, compared to the same timeframe last year.
The spike in interest seems to be widespread, according to the same analysis. Google searches for "Barbie movie car" and “Barbie Corvette" also shot up by 450% and 80%, respectively. Granted, these figures are not indicative that this many Barbie-like vehicles will actually be purchased or that we'll soon be caught in an all-pink traffic jam in the city, but it does confirm once more that a classic never dies. The classic, in this case, is Barbie's fifth-gen all-pink Corvette.
According to earlier reports, that Corvette is very modern, despite the retro styling. It's actually an electric custom model built specifically for the movie, and it's as pink and glamorous as anything Barbie touches. It also drives in the movie like a Barbie car, so it operates in complete disregard of the laws of physics and what’s possible. Then again, that's Barbieland in a nutshell.
AutoTrader notes that a Barbie Corvette like the one shown in the movie trailer would cost upwards of $120,000, but fans can jump on the Barbiecore trend at a much lower price. Alternatives to Barbie-fy your ride include anything from purchasing pink leather cover seats to a pink steering wheel, white wheel covers, and matching pink car mats. A full pink spray job would complete the illusion of a Barbie-worthy car.
Conversely, there's the option of learning from real-life human Barbie Paris Hilton, who has been customizing her cars in pink for decades. We might never be able to afford to put rhinestones on a Bentley Continental just to be able to say we're sliving!, but we could still learn, even if in theory only.
