Audi Sets Record Target for 2010

Whereas last year manufacturers all over the world faced the grim prospects of the economic downturn, 2010 proves to be more than a friendly ally of an industry battered by the numbers in 2009.

The German manufacturers, who were last year somewhat shielded from the fallout emanating from the US, are now on more than a rebound, with the prospects for 2010 opening new, until recently unforeseen perspectives.

Audi is doing its best to chip in the plan mother group Volkswagen has to become the number one manufacturer by 2018, by increasing the 2010 sales target to a record 1,080,000 cars. Based on the sales figures of past months, that target is not at all out of reach.

“With the A7 Sportback and the A8, we want to gain significant market share in the premium class. We will double our share of the segment in the United States alone,” predicts Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi member of the board for Marketing and Sales.

The numbers for October show a 5.8 percent increase in units sold (87,600) compared to the same month of 2009, while since the beginning of the year the carmaker sold 916,900 vehicles, or 16.4 percent more than last year.

The best markets for the brand last month were China and the US. Spain and UK lagged behind with negative growth, but those figures didn't account for much in the overall picture.

“We’re currently experiencing an all-time high backlog of orders in Germany,”
added Schwarzenbauer about the new models Audi has or is about to release onto the market.
