Say what you will about recent BMWs, but no one can accuse them of not standing out in a crowd. Some will say it's always the bad ones, but others will claim that bad publicity is still publicity.
Some people appreciate BMW's recent designs, for sure. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, so no matter how many people deride them for the giant double-coffin grilles (M3 and M4), the Minecraft-like allure (M2), the odd creases (X1 or X3), the split-headlight treatment (X7 LCI, 7 Series and i7), or the entire styling (XM), we are not going to hold a grudge against anyone who buys and loves them. Besides, sometimes standing out as an outrageous owner is better than passing by unnoticed in an Audi.
That easily brings us to the eternal brawl that sees people take sides for Audi, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz. And sometimes the setup is as innovative as an NHRA-sanctioned dragstrip tucked somewhere in North America rather than the Autobahn. But there is no need to take our word for granted, as we have an eloquent example.
The videographer behind the Wheels Plus channel on YouTube is a big fan of MRP – aka Mission Raceway Park, and he returned there after stints at Bandimere Speedway (aka Thunder Mountain) and The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway only to find a funny encounter between a blue BMW M3 (G80) and an aggressive Audi RS 6 Avant. Most likely, the blue M3 is the Competition version – but we can't be sure of anything other than the part-time racer behind the wheel being a true family man, given the child seat tucked in the back.
The other family hauler, the RS 6 station wagon, is both more expensive and (allegedly) more powerful, as the official ratings say the M3 goes for 473 to 503 hp (the M3 CS is still too young to appear at the nation's quarter-mile dragstrips) while the Audi Sport Avant rocks 592 or 621 horsepower if that were the 'performance' version. Anyway, on paper, the advantage of this brawl was for Audi's station wagon – even if the RS 6 Avant might be a bit on the heavier side.
Alas, when you know what you are doing, you're probably going to nail a great start after the green light – and that's precisely what happened here when the BMW M3 driver reacted promptly and took command of the race. Hence, the results were pretty bleak for Audi Sport enthusiasts – the nasty-looking BMW M3 won the heart and soul of the audience with an 11.37s versus 11.96s pass.
By the way, if that is not enough for your quarter-mile addiction, the Wheels channel on YouTube also has a recent compilation video where supercars drag race for supremacy – and there are more than eight minutes of them gunning for absolute glory!
