The S650 Ford Mustang is finally available in the build & price tool on Ford's online portal, alongside its 2023MY predecessor, and it seems that all outraged cries of disbelief in Toyota x BMW's partnership for the Z4 and GR Supra have subsided. So, it's time to get down to business – the quarter-mile racing variety, of course.
Sure, everyone would love to see the seventh-generation Ford Mustang duke it out at the local quarter-mile drag racing facility. Even one with a tremendous elevation, like Bandimere Speedway, also known in the NHRA as Thunder Mountain, is between Morrison and Lakewood, Colorado. Known to fans since 1958, it currently hosts NHRA's Dodge/SRT Mile-High Nationals – and for good reasons, of course.
Folks who know a thing or two about elevation and its impact on internal combustion engines will easily frown at seeing a Mustang going side-by-side with a Toyota GR Supra. But for all others, let us explain. The contender we see here in the latest feature posted by the videographer behind the Wheels channel on YouTube is a 2023 Ford Mustang Mach 1, which is powered by a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine and churns out around 480 horsepower in the right conditions.
But the brave little ponies are starving for oxygen at Bandimere because Thunder Mountain favors the turbo braves that can maintain steady pressure. As such, the clear favorite, even without mods – we're only seeing the aerodynamic ones, but who knows what tunes are hiding under the hood – would be the fifth generation Toyota GR Supra, which uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six mill provided by BMW.
The Bavarians seriously underrate their engines on a regular basis, so it really doesn't matter that much that the B58 is pegged for 'just' 382 hp – we're betting this black GR Supra has some more ponies under its belt. As such, connoisseurs will not be surprised by the outcome of the first two races in this 'domestic versus import' feature, as the Mustang Mach 1 bites the dust on both occasions – even if it gained the initial upper hand during the first run.
According to the comments section, things would have been entirely different on better fuel and if the Mustang was turbo or supercharged. Oh, well, maybe next time. By the way, America's racing honor was soon restored because the third run of the menacingly good-looking Toyota GR Supra was against Bernie Hund and car #H555. This old-school muscle car usually competes in the NHRA Hot Rod class – and that's when absolute destruction comes for the GR Supra, too! Well, hopefully, we will soon get to see the Dark Horse perform at the local dragstrip – and we also want some nice Corvette E-Ray footage!
