Over in China, Audi is extending its eco-friendly lineup with the Q2 L e-tron. But the four-ringed automaker won’t stop here. According to Autocar.co.uk, an electric crossover “sitting between the Q2 and Q3” will be presented “in concept form in early 2019.”
Head of design Marc Lichte told the British publication that the concept would morph into a production model, expected in 2020. On the visual front, the newcomer will share “some of the design cues of the e-tron GT.” The shoulder line, inverted grille, and air intakes are a handful of those design elements.
As opposed to the Q2 L e-tron for China, e-tron GT, and the e-tron SUV with virtual door mirrors, this member of the family is supposed to ride on the MEB in order to bring the development and production costs down. The first application of the Modularer Elektrobaukasten is the Volkswagen ID. compact hatchback, which features rear-wheel drive and 150 kW (204 PS; 201 horsepower). An Audi A3-sized is also coming “in a couple of months” according to Auto Express.
It’s natural to expect a couple if not three battery options from either model. In the case of the ID. from Volkswagen, the entry-level option is capable of 330 kilometers (205 miles) as per Frank Bekemeier, the chief technology officer in charge of e-Mobility. The third and highest-capacity battery, on the other hand, promises more than 500 kilometers (311 miles).
In the long run, the Volkswagen Group wants to make the MEB the go-to platform for electric vehicles. ID. production at the Zwickau plant in Germany is estimated to hit 100,000 in the year 2020, and an EV factory is being built near Shanghai, China as we speak.
The electric offensive could number one million vehicles by 2025, with Skoda and SEAT also working on EVs of their own. Lamborghini, Bugatti, and Bentley are taking things with more precaution, choosing hybridization for the time being. Speaking of which, an EV is in the decision process according to Bentley chief exec Adrian Hallmark. If everything goes to plan, this model will arrive in dealer showrooms “before 2025.”
