Ever since the e-tron SUV has taken to the streets earlier this year, we got used to seeing camouflage petterns like no other used by Audi to hide the lines of its electric car. After the e-tron was launched, that camo disappeared, only to surface again on the e-tron GT concept.
The car is expected to be revealed in full on Wednesday, November 28, just in time for the Los Angeles Auto show, but until then the German carmaker decided to give us the first clear look at the lines of the model which will turn into the production Sportback e-tron from 2020.
So, camo notwithstanding, here’s the first real images showing Audi’s latest electric stunt.
To be built on the same platform as the soon-to-be Porsche Taycan electric car, the GT will enter production two years from now at the Böllinger Höfe facility near Neckarsulm. This is the place from where performance cars like the R8 and Audi R8 LMS come from.
There’s no telling what will drive the Sportback forward, as there's no word yet on the battery pack. But as of Wednesday, we’re likely to see a preview of the production version technology on this here concept. All in all, we expect to see the car’s battery provide a range of about 500 km (341 miles).
When ready for mass production, the e-tron Sportback will be one of 12 electric Audis to be made by the middle of the next decade and one of fifty or so in the Volkswagen group.
On just one of its current or future platforms, the MEB, the Volkswagen group plans to build no less than 10 million vehicles.
The offensive of MEB-based Volkswagens will begin next year, and it will accelerate to such a degree that by 2022 a total of 27 models based on it will hit the world’s roads.
