Audi e-den Charging Station Presented in Miami

As one of the most active manufacturers in the field of electric vehicle infrastructure, at least on the home market, Audi presented today at the Design Miami 2010 a charging station which it says was designed when in a playful mood.

Called e-den, the charging stations plans to be much more than that, as it can also offer fresh potted herbs, organic food, magazines and coffee-table books. Unfortunately, there is no way we can understand how all those elements work together, because the car maker failed so far to release a photo of the contraption.

Anyway, the charger has been created by graphic design studio Mirko Borsche and is surrounded by reflective glass which brings back memories about the e-tron Spyder. According to Audi, the construction is both futuristic and vintage, as it is a high tech charging station designed as a 1950s American gas station, with an old gasoline pump encased in glass.

"Our aim in creating this installation is to heighten the public's awareness of the wide range of challenges electromobility presents. And we provide food for thought – not just about electric vehicles themselves, but also about the infrastructure that will have to be created to support electric mobility," said Peter Schwarzenbauer, Audi member of the board for Marketing and Sales.

The German car maker is the Exclusive Automotive Sponsor of the design show and is also displaying the A1 and the luxury A8 sedan. 25,000 LEDs surround the two cars as a means to showcase the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicles.
