Apple is working non-stop on polishing the experience with Apple Maps, and while a new expansion of the detailed city experience is long overdue, the company seems to focus on other improvements.
Flyover, a feature that allows users to fly over certain landmarks and regions, is one of the greatest updates in Apple Maps, with the iPhone maker promising to bring it worldwide (just like the detailed city experience, albeit we all know how this is going).

Users on reddit have recently spotted Flyover imagery going live in several new locations, including Dayton, Ohio, and Jacksonville, Florida – you can find the full list of new regions and updated imagery at the end of the article.

Apple hasn't commented on the updated Flyover imagery, as the company keeps refining the experience with the feature behind closed doors. However, I expect Apple to share more information at the upcoming WWDC event when it'll also discuss its plans for Apple Maps.

The detailed city experience could also witness a new expansion soon, as placeholders suggesting that the new maps would debut in more regions have already been spotted in several European locations. Apple has also remained tight-lipped on its plans for the detailed city experience, but the company has typically released this big update in stages without prior announcements.

The detailed city experience is the biggest update ever received by Apple Maps. It uses in-house maps with rich details, including 3D buildings, trees, medians, sidewalks, and crosswalks. It also comes with improved navigation and Look Around, Apple's alternative to Street View. The detailed city experience also includes a Waze-inspired incident reporting engine, allowing users to mark the location of certain hazards on the map.

Apple has become more committed to improving Apple Maps, mainly as the application is the only way to remain relevant in the automotive space after the demise of the Apple Car. Without a vehicle, Apple must switch to plan B, and this involves investing aggressively in software and services for the automotive industry. The adoption of the new-generation CarPlay isn't going as planned, as only two carmakers confirmed that CarPlay 2.0 would be available in their cars, so Apple must find a way to increase the pace of its updates and convince carmakers to adopt its solutions.

The detailed city experience rollout started in 2020, but four years later, it's still available in very limited locations. Apple doesn’t seem to be in a rush to reach the broad availability phase, sticking with updates released every few months.
