Renault has found a way to return to America almost 40 years after saying "Au revoir!" It is sending sports car brand Alpine to lead the way. Alpine announced global plans for the coming decade, and the American market is part of them.
But it will take some time until the first Alpine will set wheels on American soil. It will happen in 2027, and the model to do the honors will be an electric crossover. The A290 electric hot hatch, based on the upcoming Renault 5 and previewed by the A290 Beta concept, revealed last month, will most likely be a Europe-only product.

A compact SUV will be up next, ready in 2025, currently dubbed Crossover GT. Number 3 will be an electric version of the Porsche Cayman-rivaling A110 sports car. The ICE-powered A110 is currently the only model in the carmaker’s lineup. Its zero-emission version is scheduled for the end of 2026.

But 2027 will bring the global expansion that Alpine has been talking about. A mid-size electric crossover and a large electric SUV will be part of them and will land in the United States. The mid-size crossover will take on the upcoming Porsche Macan EV, while the large one will have to deal with the Cayenne Coupe. The two of them will be specifically designed to fit the American taste.

Alpine will come up with a new architecture, the APP (Alpine Performance Platform), that will underpin its future lineup. Considering Alpine’s DNA, we can only expect models with sporty characteristics.

The strategy sounds like a winner in a market that is still avid for SUVs, while Renault is targeting to raise operating profit by 10%.

The carmaker is also planning to build an electric roadster, which will be based on the next-gen A110 coupe, and a four-set sports car with the A310 badge.

Alpine set its target in terms of electrification. All cars sold by the French brand should be electric by 2026.

The one dealing with the Alpine products between the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean will be AutoNation, one of the biggest automotive retailers in the country. Based in Ford Lauderdale, Florida, the retailer has been selling new and pre-owned cars since 1996. In 2022, they hit the 14-million units sold milestone.

Renault officially left the United States in 1987, when the French sold AMC to Chrysler. But the company’s presence in the US market finished in 1992, when Chrysler dropped the rebadged Eagle Premier from its lineup.

Now they want to be back in the game with a whole new lineup that matches the demands of the American market. Alpine has just pulled a PR stunt. They have just secured a 200 million euro backing from investors, and Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds is on board.

The F1 team will try to get a popularity injection this F1 season. They will be racing two more times in the US this year, in Austin, Texas, and – the cherry on top – in the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
