Has anyone heard the latest news from the passenger car Valhalla? Volkswagen is preparing to send the mid-size Arteon car with a premium twist to the retirement asylum, both the five-door liftback sedan and its Arteon Shooting Brake station wagon sibling.
The death knell sounds are more common these days than ever when it comes to passenger car nameplates – as opposed to the hype surrounding the ever-popular crossover, SUV, and truck sectors. But that does not mean that sedans will go down without a fight. And when one model is retired, that's a great opportunity for another to fill its place. And lord knows there's enough internal competition to last us a couple of lifetimes when it comes to VW AG.

As such, while the Arteon is biting the dust, the fourth generation of the Skoda Superb large family car is preparing to quest for supremacy alongside the next Volkswagen Passat. Interestingly, the Czech automaker is diligently preparing to renew its entire mid-size offering with the redesigned Skoda Kodiaq and Superb slotted for a fall 2023 debut ahead of reaching their intended markets sometime during early 2024.

But while the big Kodiaq spilled most of its beans on the altar of camouflaged prototype introductions and left very little to the imagination, the Superb passenger car sibling is more reclusive and only gave our spy photographer partners the look-sie – on more than one occasion. Of course, we already know that unlike the mechanically-related VW Passat – set to arrive in estate form only - the 2024 Skoda Superb will be offered in two body styles, as per tradition.

And being one of the roomiest offerings in the sector, it was only natural for the rumor mill to pay extended attention to it. As such, it also got into the crosshairs of the imaginative realm of digital car content creators. Thus, Dimas Ramadhan, the virtual automotive artist behind the Digimods DESIGN channel on YouTube, has recently taken up the task of revealing the next-gen Skoda Superb – albeit only in CGI, so do take all of these renderings with the proverbial pinch of salt.

According to this unofficial vision, the Skoda division will not dare alienate its traditional Superb fan base, at least not when the new model is seen from the front or side profile – even though we still noticed a hint of daringness as far as the headlights are concerned, which strays away from what we have seen on spied prototypes. Alas, all CGI bets are off at the rear, where the imagined sedan gets a T-shaped taillight assembly, unlike anything we have seen on a Skoda.

Although this unofficial digital project keeps most of the DNA of the Superb intact, enough that anyone would recognize it as a Skoda, we feel that going off the beaten path with the head - and taillights is completely wishful thinking. Frankly, and we really hope we are wrong on this one, we think the Czechs might never dare to innovate beyond a certain threshold – and Skoda will remain a perpetually easy-to-trust yet oh-so-boring European brand. There, we said it!
