Alfa Romeo is on the rise, jumping from just two nameplates a couple of years ago to no less than five. However, some folks still don't think that's enough for the legendary Italian automaker.
Alfa Romeo Automobiles S.p.A. is a premium Italian automaker, currently a subsidiary of global conglomerate Stellantis, as part of its 14-brand portfolio, which was founded almost 114 years ago in Milan, Italy.
Obviously, with more than a century of automobiles under its belt, the company has enough heritage to last for generations. Not long ago, though, it was almost left in ruins and shambles, much to the despair of worldwide fans, with just the old Giulia sedan and Stelvio crossover SUV to showcase. Luckily, Stellantis has kicked off the revival proceeds, and now the two of them are thoroughly refreshed and have been joined by a trio of new nameplates.
The first to arrive was the compact Tonale crossover SUV, which landed in 2022 as the brand's first new model in six years and its inaugural hybrid offering. It is built on the FCA Small Wide 4×4 LWB architecture alongside the Jeep Commander, Ram Rampage, Jeep Renegade, Fiat Toro and 500X, Jeep Compass, and Dodge Hornet – the latter being a rebadged twin – and features mild hybrid, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrain options along with a classic 2.0-liter turbo gas engine.
Next came the ultra-limited revival of the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale offered to interested customers in just 33 examples produced by Italian coach-building firm Touring Superleggera and featuring either the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged 690T V6 engine or an all-electric option. Last but not least comes the smallest offering in the current lineup – Alfa Romeo Junior, initially dubbed Milano for just five days before a scandal with the Italian government 'forced' Stellantis to rename it.
If you ask them, they were happy about the free publicity for the subcompact crossover SUV built on the same platform as the Peugeot 2008 II, Opel Mokka B, Lancia Ypsilon IV, DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, Jeep Avenger, or Fiat 600e. Anyway, it turns out that fans – including those from across the imaginative realm of digital car content creators are calling for additional models. For example, Giorgi Tedoradze, the Georgia-based industrial designer better known as tedoradze.giorgi on social media, has a quick (or quirky) idea regarding the next Alfa Romeo CUV, portrayed as the Alfa Romeo Tommaso concept.
This design project probably showcases a sporty Alfa Romeo crossover SUV with partial rear doors (possibly a semi-coach solution like on the Mazda RX-8 or BMW i3) equipped with an all-electric powertrain and mixing the current, modern styling language with design features from the past. Most obviously, the pixel master was clearly inspired by the interesting treatment applied to the headlights of the Alfa Romeo Montreal 2+2 sports coupe produced between 1970 and 1977. So, do we like it?
