I always take flack from autoevolution readers when I write about any Italian cars, especially Alfa Romeos. Fanatic defense of the Lancia brand is one thing, but they might be right in some regards. I do need a bit of spice in my life, and that could come when the Alfa Romeo D-SUV arrives.
Since the engineers are currently working with a test mule based on the ugly 500L, nobody knows what the first SUV in Alfa Romeo history will look like. But it's reasonable to expect that styling elements will be carried over from the Giulia sedan.

That's why these renderings, made by Alessandro Masera, show a strong resemblance to the Giulia QV.

Even though they're based on an existing car, these renderings are quite elaborate, so we thought it's worth sharing them with you guys. While not everybody is a fan of Italian design, all should find something about the Alfa that the Germans lack.

The Alfa SUV will probably compete for the same customers as the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. However, a more flamboyant design and powerful aural experience are to be expected.

Even though it might not be ready for production by that time, the D-SUV is likely to make its debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Maserati is also working on their first 4x4, so Italy could recapture some of its lost glory in coming years.

The engine choices will be divided between four and six-cylinder mills. First, there's a 2-liter turbo petrol that's going to offer 180, 250 and 330 PS. As for the diesel versions, they will include 2.2-liter units rated at 135, 180 or 210 PS. Lastly, a 3.0 V6 twin-turbo diesel will be available with 340 PS.

It's not yet clear if Alfa will include a Quadrifoglio version of the SUV in its lineup. The company has the right engine for the job, and the Macan Turbo proves there is demand as well, but the QV could overlap with Maserati.
