When you’re client list includes Hollywood stars like Robert De Niro, Adrien Brody, Benicio del Toro, and when you charge anything from $20,000 to $50,000 for your artwork, it’s safe to say you’re not just another graffiti artist. Sure, the world has heard of people living big out of an occupation often considered illegal before.
Gone are the days when these artists were chased around the street of Bronx by cops who later made sure they washed the writings off the wall. Nowadays, even the illegal graffiti artists make legal money, and Alec Monopoly is an excellent example of our little thesis here.
Let us look back first. In 2010, he took part in an exhibition at the
Mondrian Hotel as part of Art Basel Miami Beach. Three years later, he hosted a yacht party at Art Basel Miami Beach, which was sponsored by none other than Samsung. Later that year, he had some work done promoting Justin Bieber’s concert documentary.
One led to the other, and here he is now, positioned in the Top 10 Most Searched Artists on Artnet’s website in 2014, right next to fellow street artist Banksy. From walking around masked on the streets of New York to driving a Rolls-Royce in LA.
Now, why are we telling you all these? Because we grew quite fond of these happy-ending stories, that culminate with petrolheads buying their dream car. After all, we are looking at the most expensive model the Brits are making, with a stock price that starts at $533,000. The luxury limousine may be a little too extravagant and too big for our taste, but that doesn’t make it less attractive.
So, here's what we got. Alec Monopoly is a successful graffiti artist who became famous for his irony hinted at today’s materialism, with his tuxedoed and top-hatted Monolopy Man being his favorite character. Yet, he drives the most expensive Rolls-Royce model he took to the shop for a blacked-out tuning job. OK, we can deal with that too.
But, golden rims? Really?
