Having just refused to recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs following a request issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Chrysler Group has announced that 630,000 Compass, Patriot and Wrangler models need to brought back to dealerships.
The affected Compass and Patriot vehicles, all manufactured from May 2008 through July 2012, have a software error which may result in a delayed deployment or non-deployment of the seatbelt pre-tensioners and/or side airbags. As a result, vehicle occupants have an increased risk of injury in a crash. 408,400 units are affected by this problem, of which 254,000 are in the US, 45,400 in Canada and 109,000 elsewhere in the world.
In addition, 221,100 Jeep Wranglers are scheduled for a recall over power steering fluid lines that can possibly wear a hole in the transmission oil cooler line. All these vehicles are equipped with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and about 181,000 were sold in the United States.
Both recalls are expected to begin in July, with the problems to be fixed by dealers free of charge.
