The annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is probably the widest motorsport event as far as vehicle acceptance is concerned. Ranging from the “Unlimited” car class to “Vintage”, “Quad” and “Electric” tiers, the “Race to the Clouds” covers almost anything with two to four wheels.
Minivans are no exception, and if you’re looking for a trip to Colorado on June 30 you might just see such a vehicle climbing to the summit. Based on the Honda Odyssey and developed by Honda Performance and Honda R&D Americas, the minivan will be driven by IndyCar racer Simon Pagenaud.
The vehicle sports a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 539 HP and 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque, similar to what Honda-powered IndyCars put to the race track. Other modifications to the Odyssey include a six-speed transmission and limited-slip differential from the Acura TL, racing brakes and suspension, 19-inch BBS wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires and a complete roll cage.
It’s unlikely that this Odyssey stands a change to win the competition, but the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has instantly become more interesting.
“Our entry will be unique, to say the least! A Honda Odyssey with power similar to an IndyCar will raise some eyebrows for sure! But with the preparation it is getting from Team Honda Research, it will be a proper race car, and I’m very excited about it,” said Simon Pagenaud.
