Ford claims that about 66 percent of all new vehicles will be powered by four-cylinder engines by 2020, due to more demanding fuel economy standards and rising gasoline prices.
According to market researcher R.L Polk, the current four-cylinder share in the new car market is already at 53 percent, which means that Ford’s estimate is more than is more than plausible.
In fact, Ford is increasingly using turbocharged four-cylinder mills for their new vehicles, including the Taurus and the Escape, and we already know that even the Mustang will get one starting 2015. The same goes for Chevrolet as well, while Volvo has declared war on V8 powerplants with their new revolutionary breakthroughs.
"It's an increased penetration rate in segments that already have four-cylinder engines," said Raj Nair, Ford’s group vice president of global product development.
On the other hand, while most crossovers are already powered by four-cylinder engines, American pickup trucks and large SUVs are still using six and eight-cylinder engines. And that’s not going to change to soon.
