I have never been obsessed with SUVs or off-road vehicles, like other friends of mine. I've driven all the recent Volvo XC cars, which were formidable. Recently, I've also experienced Range Rover Sport.
My brother-in-law drives a BMW X5, and that's pretty nice, too. But I'd much rather stick to a station wagon (like the Audi RS 6) for daily driving. If I had the budget for a cool vehicle with off-road capabilities, I would likely go for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. We had a special G-Wagen Month here on autoevolution last year, and I remember being fascinated by some of the brand's commercials about it.

I only had an older G-Class in my diecast collection, and I gave it to my neighbor's 5-year-old daughter as she is a huge fan of the model. While I have seen plenty of cool 1/18th-scale variations, I'd much rather opt for a 1/64th-scale collectible, as it doesn't take up as much space. With a machine as iconic as this one, you can imagine that many companies have sought to create tiny replicas of it.

I've also looked through Mattel's Matchbox and Hot Wheels G-Wagens portfolio. Speaking about Matchbox, did you know that Ryu Asada designed the '15 Mercedes-Benz G-Class for its Leipzig Toy Fair debut? Of course, you can also be on the lookout for the '14 Mercedes-Benz G 550 (which is mostly a Jurassic World special collectible). And then, there's the 2014 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabrio, and I can already see myself enjoying one in the summertime.

Nostalgia aside, the future is on our doorstep. Like it or not, electrification seems to be the way forward, and Mercedes-Benz wasn't going to ignore it. A few days ago, the car manufacturer unveiled the world's first electric G Class: the 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580. We knew this was coming for several years, even though everyone initially knew it as the EQG. Despite being an EV, it can still make you think it has a V8 inside and make the tank turn.

While pricing for the US isn't official yet, you can expect a price tag of over $200,000. If that's out of your reach, you can still go for a tiny version of the G 580, thanks to Matchbox. It's about 1/7000th of the price, as it's live on Mattel Creations for just $30. You're looking at the first 1/64th-scale diecast replica of the new G Class. It only makes sense that the El Segundo-based company opted for a MANUFAKTUR South Seas Blue Magno, a color exclusively available on the electric G-Wagen.

EVs are supposed to be environmentally friendly, so it's cool that Mattel built this collectible using 99.5% recycled metal. After you're done gawking at the black Matchbox Performance Wheels, you'll be happy to see that this item features opening doors. If you decide to buy one, you should remember one more thing: it ships on or before December 31, 2024. So patience is a must!
