I've been having some strange thoughts lately. With all the stress of owning a project car, an idea slowly crept into my mind: What if we just enjoyed cars the way they left the factory?
Think of the benefits. You'll spend more time behind the wheel than under the car. Maintenance costs will drop significantly as OEM parts are cheaper than upgrades. Your neighbors won't hate you anymore, as your vehicle will just sound normal and not like a racecar. The police won't have any further reasons to stop you, as you can pass by undetected if you just obey the law. Reliability might probably be better, as you're not trying to squeeze that extra power from the engine.

Am I getting old, or does it just make more sense? One thing led to another, and I suddenly realized that Matchbox collectibles are really cool. Without all the bling you get by having Hot Wheels, you can admire the original shape of any vehicle just the way its designer intended to. Since I realized I'd love to add Matchbox items to my collection, I have gotten two of them (one was a gift). And I don't plan on stopping here. It's unclear whether I'll switch to this brand entirely in the future, but who knows what can happen in five years.

The latest Matchbox mix of 24 cars has finally surfaced, and I thought I'd share the news. As with all the previous cases, plenty of repeat items are inside. That means it will be easier for everyone to get the cars they want without fearing scarcity. The Volkswagen ID.4 is back in white this year after two variations emerged over the past 24 months. I did not expect to see the 2022 Opel Astra here, and this is not something I think we'll ever get over at Hot Wheels.

Abe Lugo designed this casting, and I'm naturally into it as it features a yellow paint job. I have fond memories of driving/being a passenger in an Opel Astra G when I was in high school, and I think Mattel would sell many of those if it ever happened. Matchbox seems to be betting big on the McLaren 720S this year. First, we had the Mattel Creations variation in Gulf Powder Blue, and now it's this Purple one. If you can come across a particular 5-Pack, you'll see a repeat of the First Edition 720S Spider in Metalflake Belize Blue.

I have never really taken an interest in American Station Wagons, but something about the 1980 AMC Eagle might change my mind. This casting proves you don't need a wild paint job, widebody kit, or huge rims to stand out. It's interesting to have it on display just the way it is. For me, the highlight of this latest case is the 2022 Infiniti QX80. I don't have a lot of diecast SUVs in my collection, even though I have a list of castings I'm interested in.

The QX80 is a luxurious behemoth, and I'd love to test-drive the third-gen model soon. The variety of vehicles you get with Matchbox and Hot Wheels cases is pretty good. And it's almost strange seeing the Morgan Plus Four in the same packaging as the Infiniti and the AMC Eagle. The Plus Four is brand new for 2024 and looks surprisingly good for a basic model. The 2023 Toyota GR Supra is the last but final special appearance here, and I'm somewhat surprised the designers went for a simple white finish for the debut model.

I'm not saying that's bad; on the contrary, it's refreshing to see, especially with those gold rims. The Matchbox Tangiers Tuk Tuk is an Indiana Jones promo model. As much as I loved the franchise in its early days, it should have stopped right after the second film. I could barely sit through the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and I don't remember a thing from it.

And I don't even plan on watching the latest release. I just want to remember Indy the way he was back in the early '80s. So, I'd rather buy a Matchbox collectible replica of a hero car from one of those movies instead. But that's just my two cents.
