The Ford Cleveland Engine Plant is now the place of birth for the 2.3 EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and its twin-scroll 2.0 EcoBoost sibling. This marks the first time these two EcoBoost force-fed engines are being assembled in the United States of America.
While the twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost can be had on the 2015 Ford Edge, the more potent 2.3-liter EcoBoost is available for nameplates such as the 2015 Ford Mustang, the all-new 2016 Ford Explorer and the posh 2015 Lincoln MKC compact crossover SUV.
Until recently, production of the two motors was handled by the manufacturer’s Valencia Engine Plant, a complex located in the vicinity of Ford Motor Company’s Mondeo-assembling plant. In FoMoCo’s own words, “Valencia will continue to machine and ship components for both engines to North America,” and still produce the Euro-specification 2.0 EcoBoost.
In addition to the 2.3 and 2.0 units, the Ford Cleveland Engine Plant also makes the 3.5 EcoBoost V6 powerhouse and 3.7 V6 motor, with the latter reserved for rear-wheel drive applications. Since Ford invested $200 million into the Ohio-based facility in 2013, the plant hiked its workforce to 1,300 people.
FoMoCo also informs that the Cleveland facility produced over 1 million EcoBoost motors since 2009, engines that equipped various models sold in North America, Mexico, Europe and the Asia Pacific region.
“With the new 2.0 and 2.3-liter EcoBoost engines featured in the all-new Edge and Explorer, Ford is well-positioned to benefit from the rapidly growing utility vehicle segment,” declared Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president of US marketing, sales and service.
