The idea of racing drones was so enticing that it didn't take long until it caught on, and so there's now such a thing as the World Drone Prix, a competition that will take place this month in Dubai.
Small, remote-controlled copters that go as fast as 93 mph (150 km/h) and are highly maneuverable? What's not to like? With a carefully built track that's both spectacular to watch and challenging to fly through for the drivers (like this warehouse route), you've got yourself the kind of competition that could have us hooked in the future. Just imagine watching these things fly with a VR set on your head, receiving live streaming from the drones. You'll get terrible headaches, but it'll be worth it.

Since the venue for the World Drone Prix is in Dubai, the presentation clip had to be something special. We've seen that even the Police Department there has a spectacular video that apparently serves no other purpose than to showcase the vehicles available to the force (and there's plenty to show), so a competition that claims to represent "the sport of the future" had to do better than some coppers.

And it did, but with the help of said coppers. The trailer for the World Drone Prix features a Dubai Police Department McLaren 650s in a make-pretend race with a professional competition drone. The two start off in the desert during the day, but soon enough are seen blasting through the streets of Dubai at night while going through a series of neon-lit gates, creating a very Tron-like scene.

The car is a McLaren 650s, a British supercar that's capable of 204 mph (329 km/h) and a zero to sixty (0-97 km/h) sprint in just 2.95 seconds. With a top speed of less than half that, the drone has agility on its side (it does weigh several hundred of times less), plus the fact that it can fly. A real race between these two would be decided by the layout of the track, but that doesn't mean we can't enter the organizers' game and enjoy this clip.

There's plenty to get excited about with the World Drone Prix, the first competition of its kind where 32 of the best pilots from around the world will be facing each other and settle who is the best drone pilot. But don't be fooled by the end of the clip: children under the age of three are prohibited from attending the event due to the noise the drones make and for general safety reasons.

For more information (and to purchase tickets, if you can get to Dubai quickly, since it starts on March 11), you can visit the official site of the competition. Just so you know, the total value of the prizes is well over one million dollars. This is Dubai, after all...
