Excluding the $1,465 destination charge, Volvo's all-new EX30 can be yours for $34,950 in the United States. Following its first public appearance last month in Milan, the Sino-Swedish electric sport utility vehicle has premiered stateside at a gala event in New York City.
Why Chinese and Swedish and not only Swedish? The answer is Geely, the automaker that controls Volvo and Polestar. As you're well aware, Polestar's award-winning 2 is manufactured exclusively in the People's Republic of China. The EX30 will be made in the Middle Kingdom as well because it's underpinned by Geely Holding's Sustainable Experience Architecture.

An open-source platform, the SEA2 further underpins the smart #1 and smart #3 (manufactured by the Smart Automobile joint venture between Geely and Mercedes) and Zeekr X. Rear-wheel drive by default or all-wheel drive if you specify the dual-motor option, the EX30 will start US deliveries in the summer of 2024.

Customers can reserve their EX30s by means of a $500 refundable deposit. Come fall 2023, reservation holders will be required to choose the colors and options of their liking. The $34,950 Single Motor Extended Range promises up to 275 miles (443 kilometers) on a full charge of the high-voltage battery. The rear-mounted electric motor belts out a respectable 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet (343 Nm) of near-instant torque, enabling a 0-to-60-mph acceleration of 5.1 seconds.

Fast charging from 10 to 80 percent from a fast charger at 250 kW requires 26.5 minutes. Home charging at 11 kW, on the other hand, takes 8 hours from 10 to 90 percent. All in all, good specs for the money.

The second and final specification available at launch is called Twin Motor Performance. As implied, it's a bit more powerful, torquier, and faster at 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour). Volvo advertises it with 422 horsepower and 400 pound-feet (542 Nm), which enables the EX30 to reach 60 in a rather scant 3.4 seconds. To whom it may concern, that's on par with the larger, heavier, and much pricier Kia EV6 GT.

More specifically, the South Korean crossover is $61,600 at the moment of reporting. For the EX30 Twin Motor Performance, pricing hasn't been confirmed. It's believed to cost in the ballpark of $40,000, though.

Opting for the second electric motor automatically means worse driving range and more curb weight. According to Volvo's tech specs for the US market, we're dealing with 4,140 pounds (1,878 kilograms) compared to 3,858 (1,750) for the RWD version. The EV6 GT, for reference, is listed with 4,795 (2,175).

Gifted with a Tesla-like minimalist interior, the EX30 is certain to sell pretty well due to its very competitive starting price. But alas, it may not qualify for federal tax credits because it comes from China.
