MINI's entire two-door family is in for a significant overhaul. So far, we've seen nearly all versions in ICE and EV form, and now it's time to add the upcoming Convertible to that list, which was recently spied testing on German roads with an internal combustion unit under the hood.
More on what the actual unit might be in a few moments, as first, we have to tell you that this appears to be a sporty configuration of the open-top subcompact hatchback. One of the things that makes is stand out is the central exhaust pipe, so we could be looking at the Cooper S specification.

Some say it might even be the range-topping version of the series, the JCW (John Cooper Works), but we cannot be entirely certain. This prototype also featured a different bumper with what appears to be a sizeable intake in the middle flanked by the side vents, chunky side skirts, and a regular-looking bumper, save for the cutout in the middle for the tailpipe.

If you look closely behind the five double-spoke alloys that have a dual-tone finish here, you will see beefy brakes complete with red calipers. Moreover, the car seems to ride a bit closer to the asphalt, suggesting that it boasts some chassis upgrades, too, in addition to the visual ones. This further suggests we are likely dealing with a sporty model.

The top end of the dashboard panel is barely visible in certain spy shots, but it is obvious that it will get the traditional round infotainment system, with an OLED touchscreen measuring 9.4 inches. Running the Android-based Operating System 9, it features optimized touch and voice control. Spike, the brand's new virtual assistant, is also included. Elsewhere, expect front seats with more side bolstering, a new steering wheel, and some other bits and bobs from the sportier trim levels.

It is likely that the current iteration’s powertrain family will live in the upcoming ICE-powered MINIs, and that would include the 1.5-liter three-pot and the 2.0-liter four-bangers. The former is good for 134 hp (136 ps/100 kW), and the latter pumps out 189 hp (192 ps/141 kW) in the Cooper S and 228 hp (231 ps/170 kW) in the John Cooper Works. If anything, some of these units (or perhaps all) might be updated with the 48-volt tech, and some additional horses are not out of the question either.

Just like the rest of the series, the upcoming two-door MINIs will be offered with internal combustion engines and with electric power, and that applies to the Convertible, too. Full details will be dropped in due course, likely sometime next year when the models are expected to premiere. It is possible that the upcoming MINI will be marketed for the 2025 MY.
