The tiny Japanese automaker has gotten so busy in the field of double-digit crossover SUVs that we may have forgotten about the best-selling, single-digit Mazda CX-5 if not for the rumor mill.
First introduced in 2012 as their definitive compact crossover SUV, the Mazda CX-5 has remained a household success ever since. Two generations have been on the market, the current one having been introduced quite a while ago at the 2016 edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show. Since then, also thanks to a facelift for the 2022 model year, it hasn't faltered in the face of big competition from Japanese, South Korean, European, and American rivals.

However, while Mazda North American Operations announced an increase of 8.7% in deliveries during the first four months, it wasn't owed to a positive development from the CX-5. Instead, while it remained at the top of the charts in terms of raw sales, its figures dropped 14% compared to the same period last year. That's probably owed to the current iteration's old age and Mazda's stubbornness to fill the compact and mid-size crossover SUV segments with as many models as possible. In America, the CX-5 gets internal competition from the likes of the locally-produced CX-50, and Mazda now also has the larger CX-70 and CX-90 in the lineup.

No worries, though; the rumor mill has caught wind of Mazda's plans for the third-generation CX-5. According to a recent report based on leaked internal documents, the next iteration is confirmed with a Skyactiv hybrid powerplant thanks to an in-house setup. It's unknown if this will be a regular hybrid or a PHEV like on the bigger models, but the CX-50 is also getting treated to the electrified goodies alongside its CX-5 cousin.

Naturally, the reveal that a new Mazda CX-5 is coming (soon) triggered a frenzy across the imaginative realm of digital car content creators, too. Many of them hurried to envision their potential design project based on Auto China 2024-introduced Mazda Arata concept, but Vince Burlapp (aka vburlapp on social media or burlappcar.com), a prolific virtual artist who loves to dream of all the latest models across the wide-ranging automotive realm is going down a more personal route.

As such, he dreams of the next Mazda CX-5 with a subtly enhanced design that's very much in line with the first and second OEM generations – if this turns out to be real, some will surely appreciate the conservative styling. Others, not so much – but this is the way Mazda is doing things, as clearly shown with the CX-70 and CX-90 siblings, too.

Additionally, the pixel master decided also to take a look at the 2027 model year future when Mazda could also introduce its first dedicated EV for America, a crossover – quite possibly an all-electric derivative of the best-selling CX-5. That way, they would have a potential trifecta – gasoline, hybrid, and all-electric to cover all the possible market angles.
