The segment's best-selling utilities got better. Coming to dealers nationwide in late 2024 for the 2025 model year, the refreshed Tahoe and Suburban pride themselves on improved exterior design, a larger touchscreen, rear suspension refinements, AutoSense Power Liftgate, and Super Cruise.
Let's kick this off with Super Cruise, which is the automaker's way of saying hands-free driving technology. Not a fully autonomous driving system, the Super Cruise suite is considered a Level 2 system (according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), referring to partial automation. Otherwise put, the vehicle cannot handle all the aspects of driving without human intervention.

AutoSense Power Liftgate is exactly what it sounds like: a power liftgate that automatically opens when it senses the key fob behind the vehicle. It's pretty simple in theory and pretty neat in practice. To be manufactured exclusively at the Arlington assembly plant in Texas, the 2025 Tahoe and 2025 Suburban soldier on with a choice of three powerplants.

The list starts with the 5.3-liter small block, the standard engine for the LS, LT, RST, Z71 and Premier trim levels. For the slightly more powerful and torquier 6.2er, you'll have to upgrade to the High Country to get it as standard. The larger V8 is also available on the RST, Z71, and Premier grades.

To be added to the lineup right after the late 2024 market launch, the 3.0-liter turbo diesel inline-six lump is 10 percent more powerful and 7.6 percent better in terms of peak torque compared to the first-gen Duramax I6. The Detroit-based automaker quotes 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet (671 Nm), coming courtesy of new injectors and steel pistons, revised temperature control and piston-cooling oil jets, and a retuned turbo compressor.

All engines are connected to GM's Hydra-Matic 10L80 torque-converter automatic for longitudinal applications, with all engines rocking a 3.23 final drive ratio. How does the six-cylinder diesel stack up against the naturally-aspirated small blocks? Although it doesn't offer the same kind of power as the 5.3 and 6.2 engines, it develops 305 ponies lower in the engine speed range (3,750 revolutions per minute compared to 5,600 revolutions per minute).

It's torquier than both gasser, and being a diesel, it develops peak torque much earlier than both gasoline-fueled V8s (2,750 revolutions per minute compared to 4,100 revolutions per minute). When it comes to exterior design changes, the most obvious difference over the pre-facelift Tahoe and Suburban is the front signature lighting. The 2025 model year further sweetens the deal with two new exterior colors: Lakeshore Blue Metallic and Cypress Gray. The interior is dominated by a ginormous 17.7-inch touchscreen, which is standard across the board.

An 11-inch digital instrument cluster is also standard for each and every trim level, whereas the Premier and High Country are gifted with standard welcome and walk-away exterior lighting animations. That's not all, though, because the Premier and High Country also get animated swipe turn signals.

Last but not least, the Silverado 1500-based family haulers benefit from an updated multi-link rear suspension for an improved ride and – get this – better handling. Air Ride Adaptive Suspension and the range-topping Magnetic Ride Control remain optional extras. GM also made small calibrations to the steering system, although the benefits of said calibrations aren't clear from the release published by the biggest automaker of the Big Three in Detroit.
