Around one month after we last laid eyes on it, the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has returned to the spy shot arena courtesy of a new set of scoops showing a different prototype that appears to be in the range-topping form.
What makes us say that? The four tailpipes visible at the rear. Thus, this is, in all likelihood, the M235i xDrive, which tops the 2er GC family in terms of power and performance. The current model uses a 2.0-liter four-banger making 301 horsepower. It is possible that the new one will get the same unit as the 2024 X1 M35i xDrive, which is also a four-pot, albeit with a bit more power at 312 hp.

With the extra oomph and other potential mechanical updates, the 2025 BMW M235i xDrive, which features a front-biased all-wheel drive system, will likely be a hair quicker to sixty miles per hour (97 kph). Its predecessor needs 4.6 seconds to deal with the sprint, and we expect the new one to be one or two-tenths quicker. The top speed will probably still be capped at 130 mph (210 kph) or 155 mph (250 kph) when ordered with the optional M Driver's Pack.

Besides the M235i xDrive, the current BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is unrelated to the 2er Coupe, as it shares its construction with the 1 Series hatch and the X1 crossover, is also offered in the 228i and 228i xDrive flavors in the United States, with front- and all-wheel drive, respectively. This model uses a 2.0L unit with 228 hp, taking 6.3 seconds to hit 60 mph from rest. The time drops by three-tenths when ordered with the xDrive AWD system. Chances are the German automaker will keep offering this model in our market, albeit perhaps with a few mechanical tweaks. Europe will likely get additional powertrains.

Those unfamiliar with the design of the premium subcompact sedan that rivals the Mercedes CLA will probably not be able to tell it apart from its predecessor. Nonetheless, the new one will sport new front and rear ends and perhaps new wheels and colors, with the profile still sporting a sloping roofline. It is possible that new digital dials and infotainment system, probably linked together by a single pane of glass, will be found inside, alongside a fresh steering wheel, new door cards, dashboard panel, and center console. The tech, comfort, and safety features will likely be revised as well, and we'd also look for fresh trim and upholstery.

The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is expected to be unveiled sometime next year, and it should make its way to the United States as a 2025 model. By then, the current 2er GC will be four years old.
