Joining the exclusive federal EV tax credit party a tad bit later than Chevy, Ford, Rivian, and Tesla, the Herndon-based subsidiary of the German automaker finished the licensing process and finally validated the curvy 2024 ID.4. All eight trims now qualify for the full EV tax credit! Here's what you need to know.
Buyers must be more informed than ever before, especially if they set their eyes on something like the VW ID.4. Dealers are now able to turn the federal EV tax credit into a rebate by applying the perk at the point of sale.

That means customers must be aware of the MSRP, verify any add-ons, and ensure they are eligible for the state-sponsored discount. Nobody wants to get the $7,500 now and have the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) ask for the sum back in 2025.

Moreover, after signing the buyer's agreement, you would hate to realize that the federal perk was included in the out-the-door price, and the $7,500 remained in the seller's pockets.

But if you have everything covered and don't want a Tesla Model Y RWD, Long Range, Performance, or a Chevy Bolt EUV, then the VW ID.4 can quickly become a viable alternative. The crossover SUV is similar in size (but not in design) to the Tiguan and offers a decent range and some interesting equipment levels.

When writing, prices start from $38,995 and climb to $55,245. The most desirable trims are the Pro, the Pro S, and the Pro S Plus. All three are rear-wheel drive and get around 275 miles of EPA-rated range out of the SK Innovation-supplied 82-kWh high-voltage battery. Don't worry, though! Going for the all-wheel-drive version only incurs a range penalty of 20 miles.

VW replaced the ID.4's drive units with more potent versions last year. That decision translated into giving the single-motor ID.4 a bump in power of 81 hp, while the dual-motor version's output increased by 35 hp. The carmaker also updated the infotainment and the steering wheel. On top of that, new wheels and colors were added.

If you're not ready for a battery-electric vehicle yet, the EV tax credit is available for plug-in hybrids, too. You can order a Chrysler Pacifica, a Ford Escape, a Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring, a Jeep Wrangler 4xe, or a Jeep Grand Cherokee and get 50% or more of the incentive.

Don't forget that there are yearly gross income limits you need to be aware of. They are:
  • $300,000 for married couples filing jointly;
  • $225,000 for heads of households;
  • $150,000 for all other filers.

Finally, this is a win for VW. It just became the first foreign carmaker to have EVs eligible for the revamped EV tax credit. Let's see how sales will go.
