Volkswagen’s all-electric 2024 ID.4 compact SUV gets an important update for the U.S.-spec’d 82-kWh models. Specifically, the current motors in the rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions are replaced by more powerful units. The new drivetrains will also offer greater autonomy between power socket stops.
Also, the American variant of the ID. 4 gets a refreshment in the entertainment department, with a better display for the infotainment screen and a new sound system. The 2024 VW will roll out the assembly lines in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in three trim levels: Standard/Pro, S, and S Plus, and will carry the 62 kWh or 82 kWh battery packs.
The motors in the updated 2024 ID. 4 are quite a leap upward in performance, with peak power hitting 282 hp for the RWD version and 330 hp for the AWD Volkswagen ID. 4. That’s a massive 81-hp increase for the single-motor unit, while the 4x4 gets a 35-hp boost. The German auto giant hasn’t revealed more about powertrain specs or performance, settling for a safeguarding, forward-looking-statement-like promise of enhanced range and acceleration.
With great power comes great fun, and greater power demands greater fun-delivering capabilities; the 82-kWh ID. 4 for next year gets a 12.9-inch display with backlit sliders, a revised and allegedly user-friendlier climate control interface, and an amended infotainment menu. The shifter is now separated from the instrument cluster screen behind the steering wheel and sits on the column in a fashion harking back to old-school classics from half a century ago (or more).
The steering wheel itself is revamped, too. The ‘view’ and ‘mode’ buttons have moved from the bottom of their corresponding right and left panels, from under the menu navigation keys to inside said panel. Also, the hazard button, positioned directly below the screen on the 2023 model, has been moved further down between the air vents.
Ventilated front seats add a touch of freshness for long rides, and the premium Harman Kardon audio system offers nine speakers, a sub, and a 16-channel amp. The last amenity is provided only on the S Plus trim level VW ID. 4s. The small SUV gets exterior looks, too: ID. 4 Standard will ride on 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels (for the Standard all-wheel-drive models). The higher-up S Plus vehicles get 21-inch machined alloy wheels.
The quintessential bit of information about the new ID. 4 for America is kept under the sheets for now. Volkswagen has limited the talk about the money, stating that ‘Pricing for the 2024 ID.4 will be released closer to its on-sale date in early 2024. The 2023 ID.4 models are eligible for the full potential Federal Tax Credit of up to $7,500. Based on fueleconomy.gov, Volkswagen is currently the only foreign automaker that has a battery electric vehicle eligible for the full Federal Tax credit, given local assembly and sourcing.’
