I don't know if anyone is surprised. Still, Lexus' American roster includes three passenger car nameplates (IS, ES, and LS), while the crossover and SUV lineup comprises no less than seven entries!
That's a grand total of ten nameplates – not bad for an automaker that wasn't even around some 35 years ago, right? Anyway, the luxury vehicle division, which is headquartered at home in Japan but has main operational centers in Brussels, Belgium, and Plano, Texas, the US, is diligently taking care of all of them – new and old.

One of the latter monikers, the GX mid-size premium SUV, has been around for more than two decades as the luxury sibling of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Earlier this year, Lexus unveiled – in a double event alongside the first-ever TX crossover SUV with three rows – the third generation GX 550 based on the TNGA-F body-on-frame architecture as the ritzier cousin of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser.

Everyone is hyped beyond belief for the pair, especially since the latter is making a fabled return to America starting sometime next year. But before that happens, Lexus gets the prime time, and the spotlight on the red carpet is now focused on the 2024 GX 550 as it makes its way into nationwide American dealerships starting in early 2024.

"The wait is over," says Lexus – but there are still a few days before we reach 2024. Maybe they were referring to the anticipation of seeing where the all-new GX 550 fits across the brand's MSRP strategy. Well, unsurprisingly, the 2024 Lexus GX 550 is one of the most expensive non-hybrid models in the lineup – the only one that is costlier is the J300 Lexus LX 600. So, unlike the 2023 GX 460, which kicks off at $60,225, the brand-new GX 550 will retail for at least $64,250 – but it does include the delivery, processing, and handling fee, at least.

Anyway, we suspect the pricing difference is well worth it given how the third iteration arrives with the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 under the hood, producing 349 hp and 479 lb.-ft. of torque – a hybrid powertrain is already available in certain markets and will be introduced to the US "at a later date," too. Standard perks now include the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 and Lexus Interface with a 14-inch multimedia touchscreen. At the same time, the optional first-ever Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades are available with standard adventure-ready 18-inch alloy wheels and 33-inch all-terrain tires.

The "highly capable and efficient twin-turbo" is paired with a ten-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, and the GX 550 boasts an improved EPA-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 21 mpg. At the same time, towing capacity has actually increased for the Premium, Premium+, and Overtrail grades with the standard tow hitch to 8,000 lbs.
