GM CEO Mary Barra said that a $40,000 EV is not profitable, and now Chevrolet has announced that the Blazer EV will have higher prices than those promised at launch. The first trim delivered this year is the RS AWD, starting at $60,215 instead of $51,995, as was previously announced. Similar price hikes affect the other Blazer EV variants slated to deliver by the end of 2023.
Update: GM chimed in to inform us that the prices communicated at launch were for the FWD variants, whereas the new prices are for AWD versions of the Chevy Blazer EV. Still, I maintain that the new prices are higher unless GM priced the AWD versions almost 20% more than the FWD variants.
One month after the Chevy Blazer EV production started in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, GM began delivering its new Ultium-based electric crossover. The first trim shipped to customers was the RS AWD, and GM marked the moment by revealing the updated price. Instead of the $51,995 announced at launch (albeit for the FWD variant, as GM pointed out), the Chevy Blazer EV RS AWD will start at $60,215. This is even more expensive than the Tesla Model Y Performance for an EV model lacking in range, performance, and equipment.
Right now, the most affordable version of the Blazer EV is the 2LT AWD trim, which retails for $56,715. The same variant was priced at $47,595 at launch (again, the launch price was for the FWD variant), showing that GM wants to maximize the profit even if this means sacrificing volumes. Mary Barra said earlier that the current battery costs are too high to build profitable, mass-market EVs that sell between $30,000 and $40,000. Although the Blazer EV is not in that price bracket, Chevrolet still hiked the prices. This puts to rest the claim that the forthcoming Chevy Equinox EV will start at $30,000, as GM promised countless times before.

In fact, it's very close in price to the Cadillac Lyriq, which starts at $58,590 but is perceived as a luxury car. Only three trims of the Chevy Blazer EV will be delivered in 2023, the 2LT AWD, RS AWD, and RS RWD. An LT FWD model, as well as the SS performance variant, will start deliveries in 2024.
The most affordable Blazer EV shipping in 2023, the Blazer EV 2LT AWD comes with plenty of standard equipment. This includes a 17.7-inch touchscreen and 11-inch digital cluster, wireless phone charging, a power liftgate, adaptive cruise control, and a 360-degree camera system. The RS trim adds unique 21-inch wheels, a sports steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and a camera-equipped rearview mirror, among other things.
The Chevrolet Blazer EV might be the first vehicle available with front-, rear-, and all-wheel drive, as the RS trim will also have an RWD variant. Surprisingly, it is more expensive than the AWD trim unless GM made a mistake when communicating the prices. The RS RWD starts at $61,790 and offers a Bose audio system on top of the RS AWD equipment. Thanks to the single motor configuration, it should have improved range, up to 320 miles instead of the 279 miles of the AWD variants.
