Chevrolet Blazer EV was announced last year as GM's mainstream electric model and arguably the best response to the Tesla Model Y's success. The electric crossover was expected to start sales this summer, with the hottest version SS planned toward the end of the year. Chevrolet updated its website, and surprisingly, the Blazer EV SS has been pushed back to spring 2024.
After launching its EV stampede with the most expensive models, such as the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq, GM will finally turn its attention to customers with shallower pockets. The Equinox EV and Blazer EV were designed to spearhead this electric revolution, with the Chevy Silverado EV set to conquer the truck segment. Although GM remains bullish over its EV prospects, the company is quietly making changes to its strategy that make me question its ability or even willingness to conquer the EV market.

First, the Chevy Silverado EV has seen its prices spike, and the $40K version has been scrapped. The first versions that will get to dealers will be closer in price to the GMC Hummer EV, at over $100,000. Last month, GM CEO Mary Barra told us that EV models selling in the $30,000 - $40,000 price bracket would not be profitable. This is precisely where the Chevy Equinox EV is positioned. Its bigger brother, the Blazer EV, was already priced higher than that, with a starting MSRP of $44,995. Of course, the Blazer EV would also start sales with the more expensive trims, maximizing profits for GM.

Still, there's one intriguing detail: the most powerful version, the Blazer EV SS, has been delayed. GM has not announced anything or explained this decision, but Chevrolet's website now mentions that the SS will become available in spring 2024. This is about a quarter later than initially planned, as the sporty EV was slated to start sales by the end of 2023. Chevrolet Blazer EV sales are still expected to begin this summer with the 2LT and RS trims. Prices start at $47,595 and $51,995, respectively.

The good news is that the pricing hasn't changed, and the Chevy Blazer EV SS is still expected to cost $65,995. The base-version 1LT will also arrive in the first quarter of 2022 with the Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) variants. The SS trim will feature a distinct design and upgraded suspension and drivetrain components to cope with the 557 horsepower delivered by its two electric motors.

The sportiest version of the Blazer EV will feature a unique front grille, a two-tone exterior color scheme with a black roof and A-pillars, and standard 22-inch wheels. The cabin is also well appointed, with a standard 17.7-inch diagonal color touchscreen and a standard 11-inch digital driver information cluster. Based on the range communicated by GM (320 miles/515 km), I suspect the Chevy Blazer EV uses the same 100-kWh battery pack as the Cadillac Lyriq.
