Many people would probably agree that the 4 Series G22 is a great driving car, even though it arguably has the most controversial design in the entire BMW lineup.
The title of ‘most fun to drive model’ in the lineup will likely be passed over to the upcoming 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe, though, especially since it has escaped the trend of switching to front-wheel-drive like its namesake brothers.

The upcoming 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe got its front and rear ends leaked in early 2020, making a lot of people sigh with relief for the model not having a 4 Series-inspired snout.

That is all fine and dandy, but keep in mind that the side of the car is still a mystery so far, unless these spy photos have actually brought some new interesting details to the table.

Unless our eyes deceive us, the next-generation 2 Series Coupe G42 will forget all about its Hofmeister Kink roots and go for a more peculiar, horizontal dropping kink right in the middle of the rear side windows.

Of course, that dropping line could simply be part of the misleading camouflage, but stranger things have happened with BMW’s design language over the years, and the BMW i3 has a somewhat similar side rear window shape.

The car’s existence hanged by a thread while BMW thought about replacing the new model with an FWD-based car, but it looks like the 2022 BMW 2 Series will survive as the last bastion of rear-wheel-drive and longitudinal engines in the Bavarian compact lineup. Sadly, the 2 Series Convertible has been eventually axed.

Set to be unveiled sometime by the end of 2021, the all-new 2 Series Coupe will share the same CLAR architecture with the 4 Series G22 and every other RWD-based BMW in the current lineup.

This also means that it will be powered by a host of inline-three, inline-four, and inline-six gasoline and diesel engines, most of which will feature mild-hybrid technology.

The top of the range models will be the usual suspects, with both the M240i and the mighty M2 set to make a reappearance later on.
