Previewed last year, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, by the Concept 4, the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupe has been finally revealed in all its greatness. As you can see for yourself, ‘great’ doesn’t even begin to describe the size of the new kidney grille, but we’re only here to report, not to judge.

Codenamed G22, the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe is based on the same Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform as its sedan brother, the latest 3 Series G20, which means that it features similar technology features as its brethren, but with two less doors and slightly better performance figures.

That said, the main differences between the 3 Series and 4 Series will no longer revolve around the number of doors each model has, but around the size of the grille.

To put things into perspective, the new 4 Series has the largest kidney grilles that BMW has ever put on a production car, including the latest 7 LCI and the X7 full-size SUV. The vertical arrangement is somewhat reminiscent of pre-war heroes like the BMW 328, but that’s where the similarities end.

Another revolution is found on the tech side, with the new coupe coming with mild-hybrid technology on every single diesel powertrain and the top model, which will be represented by the M440i xDrive until the new M4 arrives.

Speaking of which, the model lineup will start on the gasoline front with the 420i, which has a turbocharged four-cylinder with 184 PS and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque, and continue with the 430i, where the same four-pot unit develops 258 PS and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

Both are equipped as standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission and will be accompanied by the M440i xDrive, powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six with 374 PS and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. That output can be supplemented by an extra 11 PS coming from a 48V mild-hybrid system.

On the diesel front, not to be available in the U.S. until further notice, the lineup starts with the 420d and 420d xDrive, both being powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 190 PS and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque.

From March 2021, the diesel lineup will also include a 430d xDrive with 286 PS and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque and the M440d xDrive, which ups the ante to 340 PS and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. As mentioned, all oil-burners are sometimes supplemented by extra 11 PS from a 48V mild-hybrid system fitted as standard.

Android Auto finally makes an appearance on the connectivity side, accompanying Apple’s CarPlay, while things like Laser Lights (LED) and cloud-based navigation systems working with BMW iDrive 7 complete the technology novelties.
