Do they make elevators for cars? Is BMW leaking this intentionally? And why copy Subaru? These were some of the questions that popped up in our heads when seeing these first photos of the supposedly all-new BMW 2 Series Coupe.
We knew that it was coming. Even though it's not taken that seriously, the 2 Series Coupe is like a bastion of RWD goodness and BMW officials were keen to announce it was still going to be available.
We'll remind you that the 2 Series name is currently also shared with a couple of tiny minivans (Active and Grand Tourer), as well as the FWD Gran Coupe. How do we even know this is a RWD 2 Series? Well, because it looks exactly like the old car with some new fascias.
We've been saying for about a year that this is what they would do - work around the old platform to keep costs down. Now, that doesn't mean it's exactly the same, as new welding technology or metals can increase body rigidity.
The German magazine Bimmer Today believes this is a 1:1 scale clay model at BMW Group’s Research and Innovation Center in Munich and they must be right. Silver is almost always used to wrap the models and make them look like real cars so the final go-ahead can be given.
The prototype also has non-functional air vents, but the shape of the headlights suggests they will come out with a production car and not a preview concept like in most cases. From the front, the 2er looks a lot like the X2 crossover, and that's not a great look for a sports coupe. It's supposed to appear light, sleek and wide, not rugged and upright.
The rear also rocks a passing resemblance to the Subaru WRX STI, thanks to rectangular taillights and an integrated trunk spoiler. The old model kind of did things better, and you can check that out in the photo gallery above.
Based on the badging, the exhaust and diffuser, we're dealing with the M240i model that's rocking a single-turbo 3.0-liter. Yes, that's the one from the Supra, though we wouldn't expect as much power, since the M2 Coupe needs room to breathe.
