BMW was in the news yesterday when a mockup or design prototype of its new 2 Series sports coupe leaked online. We're talking about a successor to the rear-wheel-drive model, not the four-door coupe that's built like a regular compact car.
Even though it's great that BMW is making another 2 Series and subsequently an M2, we weren't blown away by the design. In all likelihood, the people in charge of the exterior received too many constraints to come up with a true sports car.
They're most likely updating the old chassis to new construction standards and dressing it up to look fresh. The front end was what bothered us the most, and it's the focus of this rendering by Future Cars Now.
The features we saw in the leaks have been transferred here, and even through the gloss of factory blue paint, the 2022 2er still resembles the X2 from the front. It's got the same kind of triangular air intakes on the sides, but for some reason, they're not straight. The headlight design is also atypical for BMW because it doesn't have the double halos.
Well, what else could BMW have done? Pretty much anything else. Just look at the new 4 Series and M4. Both of them have the giant grille but can get away with being called real BMWs. Also, there's a vintage undercurrent in the sports car market, as highlighted by the Alpine A110. Who's to say you can't put 80s round headlights on a 2 Series?
Also, the old model that came out in 2014 did a decent job, looking brooding and sporty. We liked the early M235i, even though it didn't offer as much value as an American pony car. Which brings us to an interesting point. Besides the hardcore M2 model, are any of the 2 Series versions worth your time? The base $35,000 model with 248 horsepower hardly seems like a sports car. Maybe the M240i will be good, but not if it costs Supra money.
