Mitsubishi is an automaker that keeps its nose to the grindstone, making the best cars it can with its limited finances. The company has some image problems, but building crossovers should be its forte, since it's been at it for a long time, and much is expected of the 2021 Outlander.
The current generation dates back to 2012, having received two updates since then. We've always thought the interior is pretty bad, but for some people, it makes a lot of sense, as you get an economical 5+2 for not a lot of money.

Mitsubishi's designs have also gotten much better since 2012. In fact, we've already caught glimpses of what the new Outlander will look like with our first spyshots. Those images still fresh in mind, the Russian artist working for Kolesa.ru put this image set together.

We're dealing with a toned-down version of the Engelberg Tourer concept, which Mitsubishi showed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. But it's also connected to a number of other projects, such as the Delica D5 van from Japan or the new L200 pickup truck.

The front is very distinctive, featuring a shield-like X symbol unifying the lights and grille. The actual headlight beams are the ones lower on the bumper, though this is a style adopted by many automakers, including Chevy or Kia.

The proportions of this new generation seem different as well, more rectangular and narrow. Not a lot is known about the chassis or powertrains, though it's pretty easy to speculate.

“The next-generation Outlander will be kind of the first ideas of implementing and using common platforms and sharing technologies,” stated Mitsubishi North America’s product manager. So you could see Nissan's platform or even engines here.

Named after a Swiss ski resort town, the Engelberg was a plug-in hybrid with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine, electricity creating the AWD and a potential battery-only range of 70 kilometers or 43 miles. It's no secret that the Outlander PHEV has been hugely popular, and there's no reason for them to even toy with diesel now.
