They say Maybach is dead, but Mercedes has been making these luxury cars for many years now, so it can't be true. And just like its predecessor, the W223 S-Class will have a Mercedes-Maybach version or two... or three.
It's a very interesting time to be a Maybach fan. The company has already begun development on a second model, which is based on the GLS-Class. But if you're a world leader who still likes saloons, the S-Class version will still be around.
This is our first contact with the new generation. Even though we've seen the W223 "base" sedan many times already, there are some major differences that are worth pointing out. First of all, this is a longer car, and for obvious reasons. Second, the front end is different in a few ways - grille, lights, intakes, and trim.
The Maybach also confirms the design of the new headlights and flush-fitting door handles, which Mercedes tried to hide on the base S-Class prototypes.
When you reach the back of the prototype, you realize it also has rear openings for the exhaust pipes, which is pretty rare for a Mercedes nowadays. But what are they connected to?
Well, the Maybach S-Class started in 2015 with a V12-powered model called the S 600. But since Mercedes said goodbye to all its 12-cylinder powerplants (AMG included), a replacement is needed. We believe that will come in the form of a plug-in hybrid system matching the familiar 4-liter V8 to an electric motor with about 130 HP. Total system power will be around 600 HP for the new S 680.
Lower down, we should find the new S 600 with upwards of 450 HP. The displacement should be obvious, so we'll mention that a six-cylinder may also be offered. China's Maybach is called the S 400 and was powered by a V6. The latest inline-6 with EQ Boost is perfectly suited for a luxury job. Heck, a plug-in would also be good.
