Mercedes promised to offer more compact cars than ever, and they're almost done. The last major one that hasn't been revealed yet is the 2nd generation of the GLA-Class. Ahead of its debut next year, this has been spied with fresh front-end features.
Their range currently includes the A-Class as both a sedan and hatchback, the B-Class tourer, CLA-Class sedan and shooting brake, as well as the GLA. With the exception of the B-Class, all of them have AMG version as well. That's quite a lot of diversity, though bespoke electric cars, like an EQB, are also going to be part of the mix.

We're not exactly sure where that leaves the GLA II, which isn't exactly rugged and practical but doesn't come across as a hatchback either. You could make a point about it being easier to get into, and thus better for older people. Also, other automakers also offer small crossovers that are almost hatchbacks. We're talking about the BMW X2, the Volkswagen T-Roc, Mazda's CX-30 or Kia's new XCeed. It's almost like people can't get enough of these fake mini SUVs.

Excluding the ride height, the GLA will be a lot like the A-Class hatchback - similar engines, similar wheelbase, and length. But this latest spy video has the crossover showing a little bit more skin. Specifically, we have the shape of the lower bumper's fake intakes and more of the headlights. And at the back, we can make out the graphics of the funky taillights plus the arms of an independent rear suspension system, something which some A-Class models miss out on.

If you're an American car buyer, the 2021 GLA will probably only offer you one or two choices, probably a 220 model with 184 horsepower and the option to add AWD. But over in Europe, Mercedes has all kinds of funky powertrains, including a 1.3-liter turbo, a 1.5-liter diesel, a 2-liter diesel and even a couple of plug-in hybrids.
