While electric cars are dominating the news right now, Mercedes-Benz is unwilling to overlook its famous flagship model. It will be an all-new machine, most likely launching for the 2021 model year in America.
Tesla is undoubtedly still running away with the premium car market right now. However, plenty of people are still after the very best, most expensive cars out of Germany, and that's probably what the new S-Class is.
Called the W223, this new generation of the flagship has been under development for almost two years. We believe Mercedes-Benz invested at least a billion dollars into its development, though many of the parts and technologies will trickle down to other new models in the future.
While some say the German company has been dragging its feet in the design department, the S-Class appears to be a bright spot. Even with the camouflage that's left on these prototypes, you can still tell it's a wider luxury car. Longer too, as the extended wheelbase model will become standard, extended further still by the Maybach uber-luxury derivative.
As with most vehicles of this type, the curb appeal of your S-Class will depend on how much you're willing to spend. The sportiest statement will obviously come from the AMG Line, though even the normal models have acceptably-sized wheels and air intakes. Maybe the competition is finally getting to them!
Electric transportation will be an increasingly large part of the automotive landscape in Europe, but the S-Class will probably be affected last due to its flagship status. After all, you don't see Rolls-Royce in any hurry to drop the 6.75-liter. And on that note, we'll mention that the Maybach S-Class will also continue to offer a V12.
Most of the regular S-Class versions will feature the latest generation of inline-6 powertrains. These began being offered on the older W222 model starting a couple of years ago. A possible improvement is better integration of the EQ Boost electric motor. Also, it's believed the big Merc will debut a new family of plug-in hybrid systems with nearly double the battery capacity. However, knowing them, the launch will just focus on a V8 and a couple of six-cylinder units.
