Following the fixed-head coupe, it’s only natural to assume that the convertible is up next. Chevrolet confirmed it’ll reveal the soft-top ‘Vette this coming fall for the 2020 model year, and together with it, the C8.R racing car gears up for the upcoming motorsport season.
In addition to the teaser clip that you can watch at the end of this story, the golden bowtie didn’t mention anything besides “to be revealed fall 2019.” The Corvette Stingray Convertible doesn’t differ too much from the coupe in terms of underpinnings, but the design of the roof and the rear deck surely do.

Even the coupe, which comes with removable roof panels, has a huge sense of occasion if the weather is right and you want to hear the burble of the LT2 loud and clear. The C8.R from Corvette Racing, however, sounds a little bit different from the small-block V8 of the road-going model.

The racing car is expected to feature the 5.5-liter engine from the C7.R for both the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and World Endurance Championship, codenamed LT5 but different from the supercharged V8 in the ZR1 in both displacement and because it’s naturally aspirated.

It’s likely the Corvette Z06 will be more powerful than the C8.R, let alone the ZR1 or whatever the range-topping variant will be called for the eighth generation of the American sports car. But even with the 495-horsepower LT2, the Corvette Stingray with the Z51 Performance Package beggars belief.

Zero to 60 in under three seconds, heaven knows how many miles per hour on full song, and the sort of lateral g force that would make even a racing driver blush with excitement. General Motors didn’t disappoint with the C8, and given that development started in 2013 with a Holden ute and a Porsche dual-clutch transmission, the expectations were high from the get-go.

Look forward to Chevrolet announcing the starting price of the C8 no later than August 15th if the rumor mill is to be believed. So far, all we know is that the least expensive specification will retail at less than $60,000.
