Bowling Green in Kentucky was previously believed to be the place where the LT2 engine would be manufactured, at the performance center where General Motors builds the twin-turbo V8 for the Cadillac CT6-V sports sedan. But as it happens, GM chose Tonawanda in New York for the small-block V8 in the mid-engine Corvette Stingray.
Following the grand reveal of the C8 in Tustin, California, the biggest of the big three in Detroit confirmed that the LT2 would be made in New York alongside a variety of award-winning engines. These include 2.0- and 2.5-liter four cylinders, the 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V6, 5.3- and 6.2-liter V8 engines for light-duty pickups and SUVs, as well as the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel for the Silverado HD and Sierra HD.

“The 2020 Stingray is Chevrolet’s first production mid-engine Corvette – the fastest, most powerful entry-level Corvette ever - offering new levels of performance, technology, and craftsmanship,” declared Mark Reuss. During a visit to the plant to meet with employees and community leaders, the GM president also said that “the Tonawanda team is up to the challenge to build this new engine at world-class quality levels that customers have come to expect.”

General Motors has invested more than $23 billion in U.S. manufacturing operations over the last decade, including $300 million allocated to Tonawanda in 2016 to prepare the facility for the next-gen small block. More than 1,500 people are working at Tonawanda, and the hourly workforce is represented by UAW Local 774.

The United Auto Workers and GM opened 2019 contract talks on Tuesday in Detroit, and a new agreement is in the works to replace the current four-year contract that expires on September 14th. For the time being, General Motors confirmed additional commitments in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Texas.

With almost 500 horsepower on tap, the mid-engine Corvette is scheduled to go on sale before year’s end at less than $60,000 before destination charge. The Z51 Performance Package is a must if you want a sub-three-second acceleration to 60 miles per hour and a louder exhaust note from the LT2.
