Introduced for the 2020 model year, the inline-six Duramax with 3.0 liters of displacement gets 33 miles to the gallon on the highway in the Silverado 1500 with the 10-speed automatic transmission. Everyone, put your hands together for the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in the light-duty segment.

EPA-rated fuel economy in the city for the rear-wheel-drive Silverado 1500 Duramax is 23 mpg while the 4x4 is capable of 29 and 23 miles to the gallon. Thanks to 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, this engine also happens to be the most potent in the segment, capable of towing 9,300 pounds.

Maximum payload? That would be 1,870 pounds, thank you! “The engine utilizes state-of-the-art technologies to optimize every drop of fuel, and takes advantage of architectural changes to make Silverado larger, lighter and more aerodynamic than before,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer of the Silverado.

The 3.0-liter Duramax also happens to be the first diesel light-duty truck from Chevrolet since 1997. The inline-six configuration helps with NVH, and General Motors leveraged the automaker’s global expertise to come up with this powerplant from a clean sheet of paper. Coincidence or not, the Equinox and GMC Terrain will drop the 1.6-liter turbo diesel for the 2020 model year in the U.S. of A.

Active thermal management, an exhaust brake available in tow-haul mode, and stop/start technology are a few of the engine’s highlights. For the LTZ and High Country versions of the Silverado 1500, the Duramax is a $2,495 option over the 5.3-liter V8 that matches the price of the small-block V8 with 6.2 liters of displacement. In the case of the LT and RS, expect a $3,890 increase over the 2.7-liter Tripower.

General Motors considers the Silverado 1500 Duramax the fourth diesel truck in the Chevrolet range, joining the Colorado, Silverado HD, and Silverado medium-duty lineups. Customer deliveries of the Silverado 1500 with this engine in the United States and Canada will start in the fall of 2019 for model year 2020.

“We set out to offer light-duty truck customers the best of diesel – outstanding fuel economy, great horsepower, and responsive torque – plus unexpected levels of refinement,” declared Nicola Menarini, director of the diesel truck engine program execution.
