Spun off from the 3 Series, the 4 Series is available in three body styles. The convertible, codenamed F33, comes with a folding metal roof that offers superior soundproofing at the expense of additional weight.
Even the M4 is available in this flavor, but BMW is already looking at the next generation of the breed. Known as G22, the newcomer will enter production no later than 2020 at the Regensburg plant in Germany.

Employing just over 9,000 people, Regensburg is also responsible for the production of the 1 Series, 2 Series Gran Tourer, M3, X1, X2, and government vehicles. More than 1,400 cars leave the assembly lines on a daily basis, making this site an important hub for the BMW Group.

Moving on to the 2020 model, did you notice the soft-top roof on the prototype spied sitting idly on the back of a transporter? It appears as if BMW is going old-school for the sake of saving weight, as well as the classical elegance of this design as opposed to the three-piece metal roof offered on the current generation.

Joining the 2 Series Convertible, Z4 Roadster, 8 Series Convertible, and i8 Roadster, the 4 Series Convertible will borrow most of the oily bits from the G20. The successor of the F30 is set to arrive this fall at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, shaving off 80 kilograms over the current model.

The CLuster ARchitecture (CLAR) will also bring forth an electric powertrain for the 3 Series, which BMW will market as an alternative to the Tesla Model 3. Being joined at the hip, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Munich-based automaker pulls a similar trick with the 4 Series.

Over in the land of internal combustion, the G22 (and G23) will rely on four- and six-cylinder engine options. Exclusively turbocharged, the lineup could also welcome the 1.5-liter B38. In the 318i, the three-cylinder turbo develops 136 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque. On the flip side, the 316d comes with a four-cylinder diesel instead of a three-banger.
