It's come to the point where the A3 is among the oldest cars Audi offers, and we already know the Germans are hard at work on a replacement. Our latest spyshots follow the 2020 edition of the A3 Sportback, which is about a year away from coming out.
The new A3 will compete directly against the Mercedes A-Class, as well as the next BMW 1 Series, which for the first time will also be underpinned by a front-wheel-drive platform. But it's Audi that will lead the way in this segment, which it created more than 20 years ago.

The 2020 A3 Sportback will ride on a more advanced version of the MQB platform, which it will share with the SEAT Leon, VW Golf and Skoda Octavia replacements, all of which. All of them had shown longer front overhangs than before, on to of which Audi added its design flair.

The 2020 A3 can be seen with larger headlights and a grille design that resembles both the successful new Q8 SUV and the e-tron model. No surprises here, as Mercedes is also adopting a very uniform design language. Speaking of which, the A3 will sport fake exhaust tips over.

The interior will also gain an infusion of screens with the design sitting somewhere between the A1 and the A6 look. We know SEAT is in charge or developing a new type of infotainment which will be used by all four cars. Expect fewer buttons and a screen integrated into the dashboard rather than sliding on top.

For lightness, most of the models are going to employ a semi-solid rear axle while A3s with around 190 HP should have two independent arms at the back. Speaking of which, it's believed that some new powertrains will be available. For example, a 1.5 TDI is reportedly in the works, as is a mild-hybrid 2.0 TDI like the one in the A6.

For most customers, the 1.0 TFSI and 1.5 TFSI will provide the best balance. And even though the A3 e-tron has been discontinued, a new one will take its place, using a 1.5-liter turbo to deliver a maximum output of 210 HP.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
