Just a matter of hours separates us from the world premiere of the all-new Z4, which BMW will unveil in First Edition flavor at the Monterey Car Week. From these design sketches, there’s no denying the roadster looks more aggressive than any of its predecessor.
Leaked in M40i specification a few days ago, the Z4 bears the codename G29. For the CLAR-based and coupe-only 2019 Toyota Supra, make that J29. The biggest difference between the two, in addition to the body style, comes down to the transmission.

BMW made the decision to offer both the six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic from ZF, but Toyota went for the slush box without paying mind to those customers who would rather take up the stick shift. Be that as it may, there’s no question which of the two siblings is the sportier one.

The M40i features a six-cylinder turbocharged engine, which develops 380 horsepower in the United States and 340 PS in Europe. The difference in output comes as a result of stricter emissions regulations in the Old Continent. The Z4 M won’t happen anytime soon, though there’s talk about a Competition Package for the 2020 model year.

Lower down the lineup, the sDrive20i and sDrive30i will pack a four-cylinder turbo with 180 and 250 horsepower, respectively. If you want better tires, brakes, and adaptive dampers, the M40i is the Z4 to consider.

Like the Supra, the Bavarian roadster will be manufactured at Graz in Austria by Magna Steyr. Production will commence in the lattermost part of 2018, with the first examples of the breed expected at dealerships worldwide in the first quarter of 2019.

Similar to the 8 Series Coupe, the Z4 benefits from the latest version of iDrive, featuring a widescreen infotainment system that works in conjunction with a digital instrument cluster. All this technology, as well as the CLAR platform, should take the price up a notch from the previous generation.

Known internaslly as E89, the second generation of the Z4 stopped production in 2016 after 118,444 units were manufactured at the Regensburg plant in Germany. And just like the upcoming model, there was no Z4 M to speak of.
