The facelifted version of Skoda’s small car, the Fabia, began rolling off assembly lines at the company’s facility in Mladá Boleslav, nearly five months after being introduced at the Geneva Motor Show.
Meant at further strengthening Volkswagen’s grip on the European market, the new Fabia is trying to entice possible customers with mild upgrades to its appearance, but also with the addition of some much-needed tech.
For the first time since its introduction, the Fabia will come equipped with LED lights for both the front and back light clusters. Also new is the Blind Spot Detection system, Rear Traffic Alert and Light Assist.
At the interior, the advancements of the age are finally in sight. The model will sell with the company;s Swing infotainment system, complete with a 6.5-inch display and an optional Amundsen navigation module, real-time traffic information. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also offered.
"Combined with a plethora of other safety and assist systems, the Skoda Fabia offers a level of safety until now only higher-end vehicles have been known for," says the carmaker.
Already available for order, the new model is fitted with four one-liter engines, two MPI and two TSI. The lazier ones develop either 60 or 75 PS, while the punchier ones produce 95 and 110 PS.
For the first time, the new Fabia will no longer make use of a diesel engine. Until the introduction of the facelift, the model offered a 1.4-liter TDI 3-cylinder, but it was eliminated when the facelift was announced.
The Skoda Fabia was introduced by the Czech manufacturer in 1999. It sells in Europe and some regions of Asia as both a hatch and a wagon. For the current generation, the Czech are using the PQ26 platform, which it shares with the Volkswagen Polo.
Despite having launched a host of new models in recent years, the Fabia remains the carmaker’s third best-selling car.
